This new 198,000 square-foot arena was the first project developed for a new city center for North Charleston. The project has since leveraged over $250 million in adjacent economic development.

The Coliseum accommodates approximately 10,000 fixed seats, and 13,500 seats for a center stage concert served by a single concourse. Due to the high water table in the area, the arena floor is on-grade and the concourse is accessed by large monumental stairs from entrance lobbies on the two long sides of the building.

The dramatically patterned split face concrete masonry exterior was based on the traditional "sweet grass" baskets sold in the historic market area of Charleston, South Carolina.

This project was completed by Kenneth M. Betsch, AIA, while a Managing Principal for Odell Associates, Inc.

"Ken demonstrated his ability to design a very functional building with a very tight budget and to maintain that project cost through the completion of the project. He also provided leadership to the City to establish the appropriate master plan for the balance of the development.

We at the City have enjoyed our long-term relationship with Ken. We would highly recommend his services to any organization or institution seeking to plan a similar project."
